For a melee focused ranger that isn't going to multiclass out, I might not bother making Wisdom a high score. Many of the ranger's best spells--and the Horizon Walker's spells--don't rely on a DC or spell attack. You'd only really miss steel wind strike. I'd be very comfortable prioritizing Strength first, then Constitution and Dexterity.

The Horizon Walker ranger's Detect Portal feature detects portals as they are defined in the DMG (See the "Planar Travel" section in chapter 2 of the Dungeon Master's Guide for examples of planar portals.). The definition in the DMG for a portal is: The expanded spell list is what really interests me about the horizon walker. Any ranger list that lets you try something other than hunters mark (ie haste) is a god send, and teleportation circle gives you a break from survival based travel. This is a subclass that values quick movement, powerful attacks, and complete domination of extraplanar threats. Horizon Walker more than any other Ranger is what makes me lament the loss of Shield on Forge Cleric; it'd have been an excellent boon to this build. Any type of Wizard would give you access to stuff like Shield and Find Familiar, as well as Arcane Recovery to stretch out your low level spell slot stamina throughout an adventuring day. Built right, the Horizon Walker could comfortably act as a melee bruiser, wading in and taking hits, as an assassin that skirts around the edges of the fight before focusing down a key target, or as an archer that stands at the rear and pours arrows into the enemy. Imagining a dwarf horizon walker with a dwarven thrower <3 and dueling. Of course, you'll never get a dwarven thrower. You aren’t going to hit super hard as a Ranger compared to other front line martials. You’ll eventually have access to Haste and Misty Step, so your primary go-to is gonna be mobility and quick attacks.

Horizon Walker is perfectly serviceable as a Ranger archetype... and with a decent build can be a strong mid-ranged damage dealer, or possibly a decent mobile front-liner. Haste is a wonderful spell addition to the Ranger chassis, and pairs well with Hunter's Mark.

The Horizon Walker is a close-range class, so melee is probably better damage-wise. Sword and board is the way to go IMO with dueling as it is the best mix of defense and offense.
